March 1. 2016, I will begin running across America, raising awareness and donations for The 9/11 National Memorial Trail Alliance. They are a 501(c)3 non-profit, working to establish a National Memorial Trail (a multi-use run, hike, bike trail) connecting the three 9/11 Memorial crash sites. It would be the first of it's kind in the US, as there currently are no federally designated "National Memorial" Trails in existence. When it's finished, it will be an approximately 1100 mile long triangle shaped route linking the Pentagon Memorial, Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, and the National September 11 Memorial in New York City.
I will be blogging the journey on here. Thanks for stopping in!

Lots of excellent news to report today!
A few things have started to come together and I'm going to report on them today.
First of all, we now have our own donation page over on The Pat Summit Foundation webpage! Also, I have fixed the button on the right under "Donate Now". It goes directly to our donation page now. :)
Next, the good folks at PSF have graciously given us our own Event info page on their website. Go here to see it live... Vol Run 4 Change Event Page
The last exciting news of the day is we have 3 companies who have agreed to sponsor my run....
GoBalls are a yummy peanut butter flavored snack you'll want to take with you on the Go. Good for re-fueling during races too!
Paddleboard Excursions is the premier paddleboard tour company in North Palm Beach. Go to their website and contact them next time you are in the area and want to get out on the water. Tell them I sent you and Cindi will give you a discount!
Wolfe Guitars , located in Jupiter, FL, is THE candy store for all things GUITAR!!! They ship worldwide and have new and vintage guitars for sale.
Guitar players, visit their website and prepare to DROOL!!!
Whew! That was a lot of Good News for one day!
Please take some time to visit our sponsors and thank them for sponsoring Vol Run 4 Change :)

Just how does one train for a run like this?
To tell you the truth, I haven't a clue!
Luckily, I have some good friends who are ultra distance runners. They have been very helpful with advice about training, nutrition, etc.
But still, it all comes down to how your body handles stress. Physical stress for sure. But also even bigger stress is mental. You not only have to train your body to handle the long hours of relentless forward motion, you have to train your mind to not talk you into giving up prematurely.
Your body can do way more than your mind thinks it can. It's a primal instinct for the brain to want to protect the body from harm. But the brain wants to stop way before the body is ready to give out.
How many times have you given up on something seemingly too difficult to complete, only to sit there for 15 mins and figure out what you gave up on was not that difficult at all? You just needed a little rest and refocusing and you would have been good as new!
Yes, the task would still have been difficult, but you push thru to the other side. The side that says, "yes, I can do this!"
Here's hoping I can train my mind to have the clarity to push thru the difficult patches during these few months of pushing myself to new limits!

It's just a half marathon...
Well, I never thought I be saying, "it's just 13.1 miles. I'm using it for training".
This weekend, 1/27/13, I'll be running the ING Miami Half Marathon with a couple of friends from my "Fun 2B 50" ladies group.
I've been running a few half's over the past few months and I've come to like that distance. It just feels right for me.
It was only a year ago that I never would have thought I could ever run that far, much less actually like it!
After I ran the Santa Hustle 13.1 last Dec, I started thinking maybe I could do a long distance race. Not a marathon (26.2 mi). I've done a marathon and really don't much care for them. But there are lots of "ultra distance" races that go on every year. I figure I would fit good doing ultra's...I'm slow as Christmas, stubborn as an ox, and I seem to have un-ending aerobic capacity. (All very useful in ultra distance racing)
Just to let you know the definition of an "ultra distance" race is any mileage over a standard marathon.
One thing led to another and via Facebook, I was able to find out about the "Last Annual Vol State Road Race".
It seemed to be a good challenge to work toward. After all, it's ONLY 314 miles...with a 10 day limit...in July...in TN.
Seems like I kinda remember its freakin' HOT during July in TN. I guess I could hope for an early "blackberry winter", ya reckon?
A walk in the park, right? (Not!)
So here I am. Entered in one of the most grueling road races ever held, all because I've come to like half marathons.
Yeah, I know, sounds kinda screwy to me too!
Then again, I've never been known to be very conventional. Some would exchange that to Crazy...
...and I'd be perfectly fine with that too :-)

As people have been learning about my upcoming run, they have had a few questions. Here's a few answers for you...
Q-You'll have to run/walk at least 31.4 miles per day to make the cut-off. How in the world can you do that?
A-Well, I'm looking at it as a series of 10 mile run/walks/shuffles...done 30.14 times :)
One thing you learn very quickly when it come to ultra distance races...NEVER think of the race in terms of the whole distance. That will overwhelm you in a hurry. Always break it into smaller bites, if you will.
Your body may be telling you it's broke, but if the mind is convinced it can be done, it will be.
Q-Where will you sleep?
A-Basically wherever I land. There are motels along the way. It will be a matter of getting to them at the most opportune time.
Q-Aren't you afraid to be out there all by yourself?
A-The short answer is NO. The world is not near as scary as the media would have us all believe.
Always be vigilant, trust your instincts, and don't do anything stupid. I have faith that I'll be protected.
Q-Why are you doing this?
A-Well, answering that would take way more space than I have here. so I'll try to give an abbreviated version.
Here are a few reasons...
*To see if I'm capable for doing it.
*To challenge myself to reach outside my comfort zone.
*To show that no matter how bad of shape you're in, you can get yourself back to healthy, if you really want to.
*My blood runs deep Orange. What better way to help out The Pat Summitt Foundation? Alzheimer's is a serious challenge for those that have it. A challenge much greater than the temporary discomfort I will experience during the Race. I am proud to be able to help out Pat's cause in my small way.
Q-What will you wear?
A-The least I can get away with! It's mighty HOT in TN during July ya know! :)
Q-What happens if you don't finish?
A-Truthfully, not finishing has never, even remotely, been a thought in my head. However, one never knows if an injury might occur or something else might happen that is out of my control.
The1st thing I'd like to let you know is, whether I finish or not, any donations raised will still go directly to PSF. Not finishing would certainly be a let down for me, but the silver lining would be I still was able to raise money for PSF.
All I can do is promise everyone who is supporting me, that I will, to the best of my ability, start and finish this race.
Q-I don't want to save my change. Can I just give a donation and be done with it?
A-Yes, of course! You can Donate any amount you wish at anytime.
Just make sure you check the box that says "Yes, make this donation a tribute", then type in "VolRun4Change" in the "Dedicate To" box. That way we get credit for your donation and it goes toward our goal total.
You can also just send in a check made out to "The Pat Summitt Foundation" and put VolRun4Change on the "Memo" line.
Jus' keep movin'...
